Q&A with Cha Roberts

Q: How do essential oils affect feelings?

A: When the molecules of an essential oil scent affect us, our body begins to heal on a deep subtle level. One small drop of an essential oil has such powerful therapeutic properties that it can bring relief from pain; uplift our mood, while helping to relax.

Q: What happens when you take a deep breath in the presence of a particular scent?

A: We have 350 receptors in our nose that are able to perceive tens of thousands of different odours. The way the olfactory system is connected, the message of the aroma goes directly to that part of the brain that is linked to our emotional responses.

If you were walking in a field of lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, you'd be infused with the scents of lavender flower essence. The visual image of the lavender field will enhance your mood, offer added joy and relaxation, as well as give a huge boost to your immune system along with the scent of lavender.

Odours, visual cues, and memory all combine to lower the stress response. We create healing places that use visual cues and aroma to calm and reassure us, like here at Rasa Spa.

Q: How does the body physically respond to essential oils?

A: Using essential oils in aromatherapy can also help in the healing of painful tissues. [Essential oils] offer assistance in various ways - such as reducing inflammation, easing pain, and promoting tissue repair.
